Communication and Award Officer to Civil Rights Defenders

About the role 

As Communication and Award Officer you will support the human rights defenders we partner with and to increase awareness and knowledge of the work of Civil Rights Defenders, in Sweden as well as globally. The work aims to engage, connect and activate people to support our work.

One of your main responsibilities will be to coordinate and execute communication activities in order to increase awareness primarily on Security and Innovation, such as the Natalia Project and The Emergency Fund. You will also develop, project lead, and realize one of our flagship activities: The Civil Rights Defender of the Year Award.  

The Communication and Award officer reports to the Communications Director. 

The role offers great variety, including work tasks such as:  

Plan, implement, coordinate and follow up communication initiatives relevant to the organization and its various target groups, including;

  • write news and other texts for publication in traditional media, website and in other channels
  • press and media work, in connection to specified projects, including proactive and reactive media work 
  • news monitoring and preparation of media material, such as press releases, Q&As, etc 
  • produce compelling information material, reports, invitations and other print material
  • update the organization's website and social media with relevant, engaging and target adapted texts, photos and moving images

Develop the Civil Rights Defender of the Year-Award concept and execute activities related to the event, including;

  • increase awareness and recognition about the Award
  • lead the Civil Rights Defender of the Year Award project working group
  • coordinate the nomination process
  • project manage the Award ceremony 
  • coordinate the production of the award film together with external partners
  • package funding possibilities for signatory partners to the award

About you

As a person you plan, organize, and prioritize your work in an efficient way to reach the high goals you have set for yourself. You also like to analyse and break down problems into their components to solve complicated problems.

To be successful in this role you have the ability to look at the long-term significance of things and can remain motivated and effective despite temporary setbacks. If you also are a skilled communicator who can explain complex issues in an engaging and expressive manner, we definitely believe that you are the one we are looking for.

To be suitable for this role you have: 

  • At least 3 years of work experience within the communications field 
  • An academic degree with a focus on marketing, political science, communication or equivalent 
  • An ability to write fast and compelling with target adapted messages.
  • Good understanding of social media and how to work with target specific content
  • Good understanding of human rights
  • Experience to plan and structure, and project lead realization of events
  • Experience in handling external suppliers
  • Great skills in WordPress, Adobe Photoshop and easier video editing for social media
  • Great skills in Microsoft 365 (Teams, Outlook, Excel, PPT, Word)
  • Ability to produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects in English and Swedish 
  • Ability to express yourself spontaneously, fluently and precisely in both English and Swedish
